She's the Boss (2017) by Tran Ham (T)

A beautifully crafted slapstick comedy

“She’s the Boss” is a slapstick comedy that deals with the relationships among individuals. The movie also questions the anti-fraternization policy of private institutions in a humorous way and has a multi character dramatic expression.

"She's the Boss"screened at the 7th Annual Asian Film Festival Spring Showcase

Oanh (Miu L) is the manager of a bank and has a relationship with a subordinate Cuong (Ɖo An). But due to the anti-fraternization policy of the bank, both decide to keep their affair secret, to keep their job alive. But suddenly, one of the bank’s ATM machines develops a technical fault and customers are able to withdraw four times  the amount they enter. The bank loses 240 million Vietnamese dongs for this technical glitch. Oanh and Cuong both decide to get the money back  to the bank. Furthermore, hey decide to make their relationship more stable and prominent. The movies flows along these two storylines  with many twists and turns.

Another couple Boi (Thanh Pham) and Gai (Ngoc Thao) are in a relationship which is opposed by Gai’s mother, due to Boi's unstable financial situation. However, Boi eventually reaches the malfunctioning ATM, with another axis revolving around this incident and the effect ti has on the life of  Boi and Gai.

The movie deals with a number of social issues, and questions the policies of the organizations which do not allow any romantic relationship between its employees. It also depicts the uncertainties of individual’s life and relationships by comparing the events with a malfunctioning ATM machine.

“She’s the Boss” is a beautifully crafted romantic comedy with slick editing and spontaneous acting of all the main characters, which is combined with a bright and gorgeous presentation. As a director, Tran Ham does an excellent job, but sometimes the movie slows down due to the unnecessary attempt to make it too theatrical, which could have been avoided.
